Question: an igneous rock containing 60% Feldspar and 30% Quartz is weathered and eroded and a new sedimentary rock is formed, this rock contains 30% Feldspar and 65% quartz. Explain why these changes in composition has occurred. please help i am very stuck
Answer: Quartz is much more resistant to weathering than feldspar. Remember, the new rock doesn't have exactly the same amount of rock as the old one, because some of those minerals have turned to other things. So you're going to end up with more quartz in the new one than feldspar because more feldspar has broken down than quartz.
