Question: I wanted an amethyst engagement ring, (4 carats) for the 4 years we were together. Mind you, they are so cheap in price. Is there a reason why they are cheap. It is because it is a common stone? Where can I look for a quality amethyst for more money?
Answer: Amethyst is 7 on the Mohs scale (diamonds are 10), but they are still pretty durable. The reason the price is lower is because they are in plentiful supply now- it wasnt always this way. Look for a Deep Siberian, this is the highest grade amethyst. EDIT: Here is one and its not that expensive either. Dont know whether its Deep Siberian.
